Trevor Steyn (MSc BSc Chemistry), owner and CEO of Esse Probiotic Skincare, is revolutionising the way we look at skincare.
Trevor is an organic chemist with a passion for research and ongoing exploration into new ways of treating skin and fighting ageing.
For more than 15 years, his research on skin has taken a radically different approach. He takes a broad, long-term and holistic perspective to anti-ageing and interrogates every aspect of the skin, its health and the external factors affecting it.
Esse was born in 2002 as a result of Trevor’s passion for the chemistry of Africa’s plants. His post-graduate research focused on the extraction of active compounds from African plants and after discovering the potential of these plants in skincare products, Trevor formulated and founded Esse.
Esse means ‘to be’ in Latin.
From the outset, he recognised the great benefit (to both the skin and human health) of developing an organic brand that used no chemicals. The brand was established with a very strong commitment to science backed by exceptional ethics and has remained true to this pledge over its 13 year journey.
In 2008 Trevor launched a second brand, Africa Organics, an everyday hair and body care line. At the end of 2014, Trevor launched a third brand, Gwenya, which is a range of natural salon and spa products for the professional market.
Over and above Trevor’s own brands, he also runs a research and development business, Natural and Organic Formulations (N&OF). N&OF develops skincare and personal care products on behalf of more than 20 clients. These range from local natural and organic brands to exclusive export lines for larger international clients.
Over the last five years Trevor has invested a considerable amount of research into the Human Microbiome Project (HMP), and more specifically, the relationship between skin and the microbes living in and on it.
This has prepared Esse to shift focus to the use of probiotics in skincare and the enormous benefit this has, and will continue to have, in skincare in the future.
The number of scientific advances that Trevor has incorporated into Esse over the last few years has laid the foundation for probiotic supplementation in the range and has effectively enabled Esse to break new ground in this nascent sector of the skincare industry.
Trevor is passionate about sustainable living, preserving Africa’s biodiversity. He lives in Richmond, South Africa with his wife Dee and their 7 children. He enjoys surfing, squash and practices yoga.
Esse has established itself as the leading probiotic skincare line in the world. Esse now exports to more than 20 countries and is putting South Africa on the map by highlighting the biodiversity of their African plants and their potential in cutting-edge organic skincare.

THE ESSE RANGES
Esse Sensitive products combine advanced Probiotic (BIOME+) technology and gentle organic ingredients to restore barrier function so that your skin is no longer sensitised. This range minimises the chances of an allergic response by educating the skin to be less reactive.
